cells and batteries Flashcards
electrochemical cell (simple cell)
a basic system made up of two different electrodes in contact with an electrolyte
electrolyte
a liquid that contains ions which react with the electrodes
how do electrodes and electrolytes conduct electricty?
chemical reaction between the electrodes and the electrolyte set up a charge difference, if the electrodes are connected by a wire, then charge is able to flow
what effects the voltage of a cell?
the difference in reactivity
the type and concentration of the electrolyte
for a bigger voltage…
a bigger difference in reactivity
battery
connecting two or more cells together in series
non-rechargeable batteries
alkaline batteries
when do non-rechargeable batteries stop producing a voltage?
when one of the reactants has been used up so the chemical reactions stop
how are rechargeable batteries recharged?
by connecting them to an external current
