Cells Flashcards
What is a Cell?
The basic building block of life.
What is Microbiology?
The science involving the study of microscopic organisms.
What is Unicellular?
An organism that exists as a single cell.
What is Eukaryotic cell?
Complex cell that contains a nucleus and membrane
What is Prokaryotic cell?
Celled organism that has no nucleus.
What is Organelle?
Smaller parts of a cell, each one having a different function.
What is cell theory?
It is the historic scientific theory which is now universally accepted.
What is Multicellular?
An organism that has two or more cells.
What are the three main components of every cell?
- Cell membrane
- Cytoplasm
- Organelles
What is cell membrane?
It is separated cells from other cells and the cell contents from the outside and it is very thin.
What is Cytoplasm?
It is the “factory floor” of the cell. It is a substance that fills the space between the cell membrane and it is 75 - 90 % water.
What is Photosinthesis?
It is chemical process that plants use to make glucose and oxygen from carbon dioxide and water.
What are cell structures?
All cells regardless of which type of organism they are found in, share the same basic structure.
What is a DNA?
It contains the instructions for every job your cells need to do and is passed from one generation to the next.
What are the 4 vey important membrane-bound organelles in the cell?
Mitochondria, Ribosomes, Chloroplasts and Vesicles.
What is Mitochondria?
It is the powerhouse organelle of a cell; the site of energy production.
What is Ribosomes?
They are cell organelle where protein production takes place.
What is Chloroplasts?
Chloroplasts are organelles found in plant cells that transforms solar energy into chemical energy.
What are Vesicles?
Vesicles are organelles that are used by plant and animal cell to store water, nutrients and waste products.
What are Fungal cells?
Fungal cells are not the same as plants cells.
What are Plant cells?
They use their chloroplasts to photosynthesis and need cell walls to provide structure.
What are Animal cells?
Animal cells are singled-celled or unicellular organisms, such as bacteria, are made of one cell only.
What are Protists?
Protists are a diverse group of organisms that are mostly unicellular.
What is a Microscopy?
it is the use of investigation with a microscope.
What are the two main types of microscopes?
Light and electron microscopes.
What is light microscopes?
It uses light rays
What is electron microscopes?
It uses small particles called electrons.
What is the function for the eyepiece?
This is the lens closest to your eye. It usually has a magnification of 10x.
What is the function for the objective lens?
There are three lenses of different strength which can be used to magnify the image more clearly. 4x, 10x, 40x
What is the function for the stage?
This is the place where you put a microscope slide and the clips hold the slide in place.
What is the function for the Diaphragm?
controls the amount of light that goes onto the microscope slide.
What is the function for the Light?
The light source projects light onto the microscope slide.
What is the function for the Base?
This is very heavy to keep the microscope from falling over.
What is the function for the Body tube?
This holds the eyepiece lens above the stage.
What is the function for the Fine focus knob?
This is used to focus the image so it is very sharp and clear.
What is the function for the Course focus Knob?
This is used to focus the image so that you can see it clearly.
What is Mitosis?
It is the division of the nucleus into 2 nuclei, each with the same number of chromosomes.
