Cells Flashcards
cell division
A process in which a cell divides to make two new cells
cell membrane
The thin covering surrounding a cell which controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell
cell wall
The tough outside layer of a plant cell
cells
The building blocks of all living things. Cells are usually microscopic
Chlorophyll
The green substance in plants that is able to absorb the energy of sunlight.
chloroplasts
Small structure containing chlorophyll
cytoplasm
Jelly like substance that fills most cells.
fungi
Plant like organisms that do not contain chlorophyll; they obtain their food from dead or living organisms, eg: mushrooms and moulds
moneran
An organism that belongs to the Monera kingdom; these organisms include bacteria and blue green algae
photosynthesis
The process in which the energy of sunlight is absorbed by chlorophyll in green plants and is used to make food and oxygen
organelles
Small structures found in the cytoplasm of cells. Eg: chloroplasts
nucleus(cell)
The small rounded object that controls the activities of the cell
organ
A collection of tissues that has a particular function in the organism
organism
Any living thing
Protist
An organism that belongs in the Protist kingdom; these organisms live in water and include unicellular orgamisms and algae
sex cell
A special cell for reproduction. The male sex cell is a sperm and the female is an ovum (egg)
Respiration
The process in living things of getting energy from food
sperm cell
The male sex cell
spores
Tiny reproductive cells in some groups of organisms. Eg: fungi, ferns and mosses
vacuole
A liquid filled space found mainly in plant cells which is used to store water and dissolved food.
