Cells Flashcards
What is the function of a cell membrane
It is selectively permeable and controls what molecules enter and leave the cell
What is a cell wall
It is found in only plant cells. Made of cellulose fibres, it gives strength and support to plant cells. It is freely permeable
What is a nucleus
It controls cell activities, it contains chromosomes made of DNA which carried the genetic code
What is the mitochondrion
It is the site of aerobic respiration and ATP production
What is the chloroplast
It is found only in plant cells and it contains the green pigment chlorophyll to trap light Energy it is also the site of photosynthesis
What is the vacuole
It is found in many plant cells and contains water and dissolved substance e.g sugar and salts stored as cell sap. Help maintain turgor of cells
What is the ribosome
It is the site of protein synthesis
What is the plasmid
A plan did is a small ring of DNA that is separate from the chromosomal DNA within the cell
What is an animal cell
A cell type that does not have a cell wall
What is a stain
A chemical that is used by scientists in that make some parts of a cell more visible under the microscope
What is a bacterial cell
Cells in an organism from this kingdom do not have a nucleus but have a ring of genetic material
What is a fungi cell
A cell type (e.g yeast ) which has a cell wall but no chloroplasts
What is a micro metre
Unit of measurement equivalent to 1/1000 mm
What is a plant cell
A cell type which have cell walls and often have chloroplasts
