Cells Flashcards
What is the Nucleus?
A large organelle surrounded by a nuclear envelope (double membrane), with pores. Contains chromatin and usually a nucleolus.
What is the Chloroplast?
A small flattened structure found in plant cells. Surrounded by a double membrane, and also has membranes inside called Thylakoid membranes. These are stacked up in some parts to form grana. Grana are linked together by lamellae - thin, flat pieces of thylakoid membrane.
What is the Golgi Apparatus?
A system of membranes enclosing a fluid-filled space.
What is the Lysosome?
A round organelle surrounded by a membrane, with no defined internal structure.
What is the Microvilli?
These are folds in the cell surface membrane that form mini projections.
What is the Cell Surface (Plasma) Membrane?
Found on the surface of animal cells and just inside the cell wall of plant cells. Made mainly of lipids and proteins.
What is the Endoplasmic Reticulum?
A system of membranes enclosing a fluid-filled space and has ribosomes attached to it.
What is the Vesicle?
A group of fluid-filled flattened sacs.
What is the Ribosome?
A very small organelle that floats free in the cytoplasm or is attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum.
What is the Mitochondrion?
Usually oval shaped. They have a double membrane - the inner one is folded to form structures called cristae, inside is the matrix. The site of aerobic respiration.
What is the Cell Wall?
A rigid structure that surrounds plant cells. Made of mainly the carbohydrate cellulose.
What is the function of the Nucleus?
Chromatin is made of proteins and DNA. DNA controls cell activity. The pores allow substances (eg RNA) to move between the nucleus and cytoplasm. The nucleolus makes ribosomes.
What is the function of the Chloroplast?
The site where Photosynthesis takes place. Some parts of photosynthesis take place in the grana, and other parts happen in the stroma (a thick fluid).
What is the function of the Golgi Apparatus?
Processes and packages new lipids and proteins. It also makes lysosomes.
What is the function of the Lysosome?
Contains digestive enzymes. These are kept separate from the cytoplasm by a surrounding membrane, and can be used to digest invading cells or to break down worn out organelles in the cell.
