Cells Flashcards
Cell membrane
The layer that surrounds the cell
Also known as the gate keeper
Separates a cell from its environment
Selectively permeable (allows certain things to enter and exit the cell)
Cell wall
A ridged structure that surrounds the membrane of PLANT cells only.
Provides structural support for PLANT cells and holds the shape of the cell
• ONLY PLANT CELLS HAVE A CEll WALL. THATS ONE THING THAT MAKES THEM UNIQUE
Cytoplasm
Jelly like substance that contains all the materials of the cell. Surrounds of everything outside the nucleus.
Holds all organelles within the cell.
Nucleus
Has its own membrane and contains the DNA and nucleolus.
Controls various cell processes.
Is like the brain of the cell.
Vacuole
Large storage sac. Larger in plant cells.
Storage area for cell waste, mostly water and food.
Endoplasmic reticulum
Network of channels throughout the cytoplasm that transports materials around the cell
MAKES PROTEINS AND STERIODS
- Rough ER-has ribosomes
- Smooth ER-has no ribosomes
Mitochondria
Oval shape membrane bound organelle
Side of cellular respiration, produces energy by breaking down glucose.
Chloroplast
Flat, oval shaped organelle that contains light capturing pigment called chlorophyl.
Site of photosynthesis in the production of energy rich compounds such as glucose
• Only found in plant cells
Ribosomes
Small organelle found either in the cytoplasm or on endoplasmic reticulum
Involved in making proteins
Lysosomes
Small, organelle filled with enzymes and produced by the Golgi body and animal cells.
Responsible for waste digestion, distractions of damage organelles, destroy cells in areas with space is needed.
