Cells Flashcards
Basic types of cells
Define tissue
A group of similar cells that carry out a similar function
Define Vacuole
Stores water and nutrients for the cell; very large in plant cells
Define Nucleus
The Organelle that contains the DNA and controls the processes of the cell Organelle
Define Prokaryote
A unicellular organism that lacks a nucleus and membrane bound organelles
Define vesicle
A membrane bound sac that contains materials involved in transport of the cell
Define Cytoskeleton
A network of long protein strands that help support the cell
Define Chloroplast
A plastid containing chlorophyll, the site of photosynthesis
Define Cell
A membrane bound structure that is the basic unit of life
Define Eukaryote
A cell that contains a nucleus and membrane bound organelles
Define Ribosomes
An Organelle that functions in the synthesis of proteins
Define Cell Membrane
The lipid bilayer that forms the outer boundary of the cell
Define Nuclear Envelope
A double membrane that surrounds the nucleus in the cell
Define Mitochondria
Produces energy (ATP) from oxygen and sugar (cellular respiration)
Define Golgi Apparatus
A system of membranes that modifies and packages proteins for export by the cell
Define Smoot Endoplasmic Reticulum
Portion of the Endoplasmic Reticulum free from ribosomes
