Cells Flashcards
What are the two main types of cell recognised by their structure?
Prokaryotic
Eukaryotic
What does the nucleus do?
Controls the cell, contains the genetic information
What does cytoplasm do?
Where chemical reactions take place
What does cell membrane do?
Controls what substances go in and out of the cell
What does chloroplast do?
Contains a green substance where photosynthesis takes place
What does the cell wall do
Made of cellulose, gives the cell structure and support
What do ribosomes do?
Where protein synthesis takes place. (Where protein is made)
What happens in mitochondria?
Where aerobic respiration takes place
Are we multicellular or unicellular?
Multicellular - we’re made up of around 200 different types of cell. They’re known as animal cells
What does the vacuole do?
Contains a liquid called cell spa that keeps the cell firm
What do you have to do to convert cm to mm?
x10
What do you have to do to convert mm to micrometer?
x1000
What do you do to convert micrometer to nanometer
x1000
What is magnification?
The number of times bigger the image looks compared to the real object.
What is the real object?
The specimen you out under the microscope.
What is the image?
What you see then you look through the microscope. The image of the real object appears magnified.
What is resolution
Resolving power - the ability of a microscope or telescope to measure angular separation. (How much detail can be generated by the microscope)
What is the equation for magnification?
Magnification = size of image / size of real object
Is prokaryotic unicellular or multicellular? How old is it?
Unicellular
Around 4,000,000,000 years old
What is the nucleoid?
Where DNA is located, not a membrane bound nucleus
What is he function of the xylem cell?
Used to transport water and minerals from the roots to the leaves.
What is a stem cell?
A stem cell is a cell that has not yet become specialised yet.
Where does an embryonic stem cell come from?
These come from a developing embryo- usually discarded after IVP
Name two types in stem cell
Adult and embryonic stem cells
What is the most useful type of stem cell?
Embryonic stem cells are the most useful because they can be used for anything, adult stem cells can’t
What does G R R stand for in mitosis?
