Cells Flashcards
What are cells
The smallest functional unit in an organism.
What are chromosomes
A threadlike structure of nucleic acids and proteins that are in the nucleus of most living cells with genetic info in the form of genes.
What is DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid are the instructions of life and all living things and viruses. It’s in the cells nucleus. DNA are little structures made up of chromosomes. Each DNA is tightly coiled many times around proteins.
What is active transport?
The movement of molecules across the cell membrane assisted by enzymes.
What is passive transport?
The movement of molecular substances across cell membranes without the need of energy input.
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules through the membrane. It’s the way water is transported in and out of cells.
What is diffusion?
The process molecules traveling from cramped places to bigger spread out places.
What is mitosis?
When one cell splits into two. Two identical cells having the same number of chromosomes. Interphase is the resting phase between the two stages of mitosis and the chromosomes become visible.
