Cells Flashcards
What is a Cell?
cells are the building blocks of all organisms.
what does a cell membrane do?
a cell membrane surrounds the cell with a thin covering. it controls the movement of the cell from inside to out.
what is the nucleus?
a nucleus is round, and dark coloured. it controls the cells activities and eventually dies without the cell.
what is cytoplasm?
cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance. it is where all chemical reactions occur and it contains organelles.
what do organelles do?
organelles help to keep the cell functioning correctly.
what is a vacuole?
a vacuole is where water and dissolved substances are stored.
what is a chloroplast?
a chloroplast is needed for photosynthesis, it contains green chlorophyll.
what is the word equation for fermentation?
glucose —> carbon dioxide + alcohol.
what is bacteria?
bacteria is a unicellular organism.
what is a tissue?
a tissue is a group of similar cells to do a particular job.
what is an organ?
an organ is a collection of specialised tissues that have a particular function.
what is the word equation for cell respiration?
glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water.
what is mitochondria?
mitochondria is tiny organelles that are shaped as round or sausage shape, depending what cell it is.
what is photosynthesis?
photosynthesis is an endothermic process which occurs in organisms containing chlorophyll.
how do you calculate actual size?
actual size= measured length/ magnification.
