Cells Flashcards
What are ribosomes?
This is where protein synthesis takes place.
Name 3 things plant and algae cells have and animal cells do not
Cell wall
Chloroplasts with chlorophyll
Permanent vacuole
Where is the genetic material stored in bacteria?
The cytoplasm, because bacteria do not have a nucleus.
What is yeast?
A single-called organism
What is in a yeast cell?
Nucleus
Cell wall
Cytoplasm
Cell membrane
What is in a bacteria cell?
Cell membrane Cytoplasm Genetic material in the cytoplasm Cell wall Slime capsule Plasmids Flagella
When are specialised cells made?
When an organism matures, each cell develops into a particular types.
Why do muscle cells need a lot of mitochondria?
Mitochondria release energy which muscles need for movement.
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the spreading out of the particles of a gas, or any substance in solution.
What determines the net movement of particle across a cell membrane?
The concentration on either side of the membrane.
The greater the greater the difference in concentration in diffusion…
the faster the rate of diffusion.
During the development of multicellular organisms…
the cells differentiate.
Name 3 animal tissues
Muscular tissue
Glandular tissue
Epithelial tissue
Name 3 plant tissues
Epidermal tissue
Mesophyll
Xylem and Phloem
What does the muscular tissue do?
Contracts to bring about movement
What does the glandular tissue do?
Produces substances such as enzymes or hormones
What does the epithelial tissue do?
Covers some parts of the body.
What does the epidermal tissue do?
Covers the plant
What does the mesophyll tissue do?
Photosynthesise
What do the xylem and phloem tissues do?
Transport substances around the plant
What must the food you eat be changed from into?
Insoluble molecules into soluble molecules
What is an organ system?
Groups of organs working together forms an organ system.
Give some examples of plant organs
Stems
Leaves
Roots
What are organs made of?
Several tissue types.
What organisms can photosynthesis be carried out by?
Plants and algae
What is the photosynthesis equation?
Carbon dioxide (light energy) glucose \+ water ------------> + oxygen
What is released as a by product of photosynthesis?
Oxygen
What is some of the glucose in photosynthesis converted into?
Insoluble starch for storage
In photosynthesis, where is carbon dioxide taken in?
By the leaves
In photosynthesis, where is water taken up?
By the roots
In photosynthesis, what do the chlorophyll do?
Trap light energy needed for photosynthesis.
What colour does iodine turn where starch has been made and photosynthesis has occurred?
Blue-black
What is the mitochondria?
Where energy is released during aerobic respiration.
