Cells Flashcards
0
Q
What is an organelles?
A
The cell’s structures.
1
Q
What is a cell?
A
The smallest unit of a living thing that can carry out a basic process of life.
2
Q
What is a cell’s membrane?
A
- layer around the outside of the cell
- gives the cell it shape
- controls what moves in and out of the cell
- wraps around the cell like your skin wraps around you
3
Q
What is cytoplasm?
A
- gel-like substance that supports all of the organelles that carry out the different jobs in the cell
- constantly moving through the cell in a stream-like motion
4
Q
What is a nucleus?
A
- a large spherical structure found in the center of the cell
- has a double membrane with pores, or opening to allow certains things to go in and out
- controls all the activity in the cell
- tells the cell when to break down food, to grow, to move, or die
5
Q
What is a mitochondria?
A
- have a folded inner membrane
- breaks down food and turns it into energy for the cell to use
6
Q
What does animal’s vacuoles does?
A
- stores water, food, and wastes
- nucleus tells it to release whatever it is holding
7
Q
What is a cell wall?
A
- an additional layer around the outside of the cell
- made from hard, specialized sugar, called cellulose
8
Q
What does plant’s vacuoles do?
A
- stores water
- gives support
9
Q
What is chloroplasts?
A
- turns energy from sunlight into food
- contains a chemical that turns it green
10
Q
What is a microscope?
A
- an instrument to make things bigger
