Cells Flashcards
Who discovered the cell?
Robert Hooke
What are the three tenets of cell theory?
- Cells are the basic unit of living things
- All living things contain cells
- All cells come from existing cells
What are the parts common to most cells?
- genetic material
- cell membrane
- cytoplasm
- membrane-bound organelles
What is the difference between a eukaryote and a prokaryote?
eukaryote contains a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles, and a prokaryote does not.
Why are most cells so small?
Because specialized cells are easier to replace and turnover without disruption. organisim has larger size and longer life.
What parts do plant cells have that animal cells don’t?
- cell wall
2. chloroplasts
What do chloroplasts do for plant cells?
cell walls?
chloroplasts-photosynthesis, uses sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make food for the plant.
cell wall-protection, support, keep shape
What is the function of a cell membrane?
Protects the cell from its surroundings
What are the advantages of being multicellular?
cells do different things. (specialized cells) organism has longer life and larger size.
What are the 4 levels of organization in living things?
- cells
- tissues
- organs
- organ systems
What make diffusion happen?
law of Entropy-systems move towards increasing disorder
What is osmosis and how does it work?
The movement of water molecules from a higher concentration to a lower concentration through a semipermeable membrane.
How are active transport and passive transport different?
active transport requires energy to get things into the cell, and passive transport does not.
how do plant cells get energy?
chloroplasts get energy from the sun, and use it in conjunction with water and carbon dioxide to make food for the plant.
how do animal cells get energy?
it eats other organisms (respiration)
