Cells Flashcards
What does the nucleus do ?
The nucleus controls the cells metabolism and stores genetic information (DNA in chromosomes)
What does the cytoplasm do ?
Transport materials through the cell and Is the site of many chemical reactions associated with the cell’s metabolism .
What is the function of the Vacuoles ?
Contain wastes or useful materials such as water or food. Some are specialized to digest food ; others pump excess water out of the cell.
What are the function of ribosomes ?
Important to the process if making protein
What is the function of the Mitochondria ?
Contain enzymes used to extract energy from nutrients
What structure is the boundary between a living cell and it’s environment ?
Cell membrane
The genetic material of an animal cell is found in the
Nucleus
What is the function of the cell membrane ?
Separates contents of the cell from the environment, controls transport of materials in and out of cell and recognize and responds to chemical signs.
What is the function of the chloroplasts ?
Captures light energy used to produce food for the plant
What is diffusion ?
The movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration
Does diffusion require energy ?
No (pulling a sled downhill)
Many molecules diffuse in and out of cells; why is the diffusion of water important ?
Important to maintain homeostasis
What is active transport ?
Moving a molecule from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration (Pulling a sled uphill)
Does active transport require energy ?
Yes (pulling a sled uphill) requires energy from ATP
What organic molecules are too large and complex to enter the cell ?
Proteins and starches
