cells Flashcards
What does the cell membrane do?
Control which substrates can pass in and out of the cell.
What does the nucleus do?
Contains genetic material/DNA
What does the cytoplasm do?
Where chemical reactions take place
What does the mitochondria do?
Site of Aerobic respiration, Provide cells with the energy they need to function
What do ribsomes do?
site of protein synthesis
What are the extra organelles in plant cells
-rigid cell wall
-permanent vacuole
-Chloroplasts
What does the cell wall do in plant cells?
Support and structure for the cell
What is the cell wall made out of in plant cells?
Cellulose
What does the permanent vacuole do in a plant cell?
it contains cells sap (a mixture of sugars, salts, water)
What do chloroplasts do in a plant cell?
Photosynthesis
What do bacteria cells have?
-cell wall
-cell membrane
-ribosomes
-cytoplasm
- single circular strand of DNA
-sometimes have plasmids and/or flagella
What cells are eukaryotes?
Plants and Animals
What cells are Prokaryotes
Bacteria
True or false? Bacteria have both cell membrane and a cell wall.
True
Are bacteria cells larger or smaller than animal cells?
smaller
Are Bacteria unicellular or multicellular
Unicellular
Steps of Mitosis and cytokinesis
1.DNA condenses to form chromosomes.
2.Chromosomes line up along the centre of the cells.
3.Cell fibres pull the two arms of each chromosome to opposite sides (poles) of the cell.
4.Cytokinesis - the entire cell divides to form two identical daughter cells.
Multicellular organisms, like ourselves, require a continuous supply of new cells.
What are the three reasons why new cells are required?
- Growth (we need more cells as we grow)
- Development (we need new cell types as we develop new tissue)
- Repair (we need to replace the cells we lose each day)
What is the cell cycle?
The series of steps that take place as a cell grows and then divides.
How many pairs of human cells do most humans have?
Human cells have 23 pairs of chromosomes, so 46 chromosomes in total.
Are the cells created by mitosis genetically identical to each other, or genetically different?
Genetically identical
When a cell divides by mitosis, how many cells are produced?
2
What do we commonly call the cells produced by mitosis?
Daughter cells
Name the two types of stem cells found in animals?
Adult stem cells
Embryonic stem cells
