Cells Flashcards
What are the two types of cells?
Prokaryote and Eukaryote.
What is a prokaryote?
Cell with no definite nucleus. DNA is enclosed by a membrane.
What is a Eukaryote?
Cell with a distinct nucleus. DNA is enclosed by a membrane.
What is a cell membrane?
Semi-permeable structure that forms the outer boundary of the cell.
What is cytoplasm?
Jelly-like transparent substance in the cell.
What is protoplasm?
Living parts of the cell( cell membrane, cytoplasm and organelles)

What is the fluid mosaic model?
The model that describes the arrangement of lipid and protein molecules in cell membranes. It states two layers if phospholipids have hydrophilic phosphate head and a hydrophobic tail, made of 2 fatty acids.
Draw the fluid mosaic model?

What is diffusion?
Movement of particles from one area of high concentration to and area of low concentration until equilibrium is reached.
What is osmosis?
Movement of WATER particles from high concentration to low concentration across a semi-permeable membrane.
Passive transport?
transport for which energy is not needed, eg diffusion across a cell membrane
What is active transport?
movement of substances through a semi-permeable membrane in living cells against a concentration gradient, requires energy
Adenosine Triphosphate?
ATP, substance used to store energy in living cells.
