Cells Flashcards
Types of cell damage
Physical - trauma, temp,extremes, radiation
Biological - bacteria, virus, parasite
Chemical - toxins, poisons, foreign substance
Metabolic - toxic build up, ischaemia, nutritional balance, fluid imbalance
List specialised cells
RBC (erythrocyte)
Spermatozoa (sperm cell)
Ova (egg cell)
Neurons (nerve cell)
RBC structure
Large SA
Bioconcave
No nucleus
He
RBC function
To carry oxygen around the body
RBC link between structure and function
No nucleus and bioconcave allow for oxygen to be carried
Spermatozoa structure
Long tail
Big head
Spermatozoa function
To fertilise egg to form an embryo
Spermatozoa link between structure and function
Long tail w increased mitochondria allows sperm to swim towards the egg
Big head = sperm can bury into egg easier
Ova structure
Large
Cytoplasm
Ova function
To join with sperm and provide food for zygote
Ova link b/w structure and function
Cytoplasm = most chemical reactions take place this allows for cell growth, expansion and replication (zygote)
Neuron structure
Connection point at each end (dendrites and axon terminals)
Neuron functions
To transmit electrical signals
Neuron link b/w structure and function
Connections at each end allow for electrical signals to be passed on form the nervous system to other systems and organs
