cells Flashcards
what is a prokaryotic cell?
a cell that has circular DNA that is not surrounded by a membrane bound nucleus e.g. bacteria
DNA is shorter
what is a eukaryotic cell?
a cell that has linear DNA that is surrounded by a membrane bound nucleus e.g. animals ,plant, fungi
DNA is longer
what is linear DNA associated with?
histone proteins
describe the structure of a nucleus
has a double membrane, nuclear pores and a dark staining region called the nucleolus
what is the function of the nucleus?
to store the cells genetic material (DNA) and control the production of proteins
what is the function of nucleolus?
to make ribosomal RNA (rRNA) which is used to make ribosomes
what is the function of the golgi body?
. receives proteins from the rER and lipids from the smooth endoplasmic reticulum.
. the proteins/lipids are then modified and processed into glycoproteins/glycolipids.
the golgi body then packages these proteins and lipids into vesicles
what are lysosomes?
they are vesicles produced by the Golgi body that contain enzymes (mainly proteases and lipases). they also contain an enzyme called lysozyme which hydrolyses the cell wall of bacteria
