Cells Flashcards
What is the Mitochondria
The powerhouse of the cell. They produce ATP. Responsible for cell respiration!
Ribosomes
Responsible for making proteins translated from mRNA instructions
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Rough from ribosomes.
Produces proteins and sorts
Found in eukaryotic cells
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
It detoxifies as well as makes lipids and hormones.
Found in eukaryotic cells
Amino Acids
The building blocks of cells. A basic unit of protein.
Nucleolus
Located in the nucleus, it creates ribosomes
Nucleus
Home to DNA, responsible for cell activities
Ribosomes
They translate RNA to aid in protein synthesis
Cytoplasm
Liquid in a cell that provides structure and movement
Homeostasis
Ability to maintain a stable internal environment
Cell Membrane
The castle walls of the cell. It maintains stability by only letting specific material inside.
Prokaryotes
Bacteria and archaea. They lack a nucleus and lack membrane bound organelles.
Think PRO=NO
Eukaryotes
Fungi, plant and animal cells. They contain a nucleus.
Think EU= Do
Mitosis
Cell division leading to 2 daughter cells with the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus.
Meiosis
Cell division resulting in 4 daughter cells with HALF the number of chromosomes as the parent cell.
