cells Flashcards
studying
what are cells?
they are basic units/forms of life
name 2 cells
plant and animals
what are organelles?
a specialized structure within the cell that performs a function for the cell
what is the function of the cell membrane?
controls which substances are allowed to enter and leave the cell
what is the function of the cytoplasm?
its where chemical reactions take place
what is the function of the nucleus?
controls all the processes and chemical reactions that take place in the cell
what does the mitochondrion do?
its in charge of supplying the cell with energy - converts stored food into energy for the cell
what is the vacuole and where is it found?
it stores nutrients and water and helps support the plant - found in plant cells
what does the nucleus carry?
genetic information
what is the chloroplast?
site of photosynthesis
what is the cell wall formed of and what is its purpose?
its formed of cellulose and gives the cell shape
what are differences between plant and animal cells?
plant cell
-contains a chloroplast
-regular shape
-has a cell wall
-large vacuole
animal cell
-no chloroplast
-irregular shape
-no cell wall
-small/no vacuole
name two types of cells
unicellular and multicellular
