Cells Flashcards
A small structure inside a cell, where energy is released from food
Mitochondrion
A structure found inside animal cell, and plant cell, which controls the activity of the cell
Nucleus
A thin, flexible skin on the outside of every cell, which controls what enters and leaves the cell
Cell Membrane
Make things bigger then they really are
Magnify
The background substance that fills a cell, in which many chemical reactions happen
Cytoplasm
One of the smallest structures that make up living organism
Cell
The space inside a plant cell containing liquid (Sap)
Sap Vacuole
One of the many structures inside some plant cell, which contain the green pigment chlorophyll; where photosynthesis takes place
Chloroplast
The strong, stiff outer covering of plant and bacterial cells
Cell Wall
The substance that makes up cell walls in plants
Cellulose
Weakness
Limitation
The green substance in plants that allows them to use energy from the sun
Chlorophyll
A cell with tiny threads called cilia along its edge which can move in wave like motion
Ciliated Cell
To colour something
Stain
A cell that carries electrical signals form one place to another
Neurone
A cell that is found on the outside of plant roots, and is specialized to absorb water
Root Hair Cell
A cell found inside the leaf of a plant; this is where most photosynthesis happens
Palisade Cell
A colored substance; chlorophyll and haemoglobin are pigments
Pigment
A red pigment inside red blood cells, which carries oxygen around the body
Haemoglobin
A short strand of cytoplasm on a neurone which collects electrical signals
Dendrite
A very small cell with no nucleus that delivers oxygen to every part of the body
Red Blood Cell
Built to its job really well
Specialized
Having features that help it function
Adapted
Soak up
Absorbed
Sticky substance made my cells lining the tubes from the mouth to the lungs. Mucus traps dust and bacteria
Mucus
The job that something does or the role it plays
Function
The smallest type of blood vessel, which delivers blood close to every cell in the body
Capillary
Tiny hair-like structures that extend from the surface of some cells
Cilia
A very long strand of cytoplasm along which electrical signals travels
Axon
A living thing
Organism
A group of similar cells that work together that work together for a particular function
Tissue
A set of organs that all work together to carry out the same function
Organ System
A structure that is made up of many different tissues, which work together to perform a particular function
Organ
The tissue made up of many palisade cells arranged side by side in a leaf
Palisade Layer
A tissue made up of cells with no chloroplasts, which covers the top surface of the leaf
Upper Epidermis
The tissue on the surface of the layers of an onion bulb
Onion Epidermis
The tissue made up of many rounded cells containing chloroplasts, found beneath the palisade layer inside a leaf
Spongy Layer
The tissue that covers the lower surface of the leaves
Lower Epidermis
Tissue that lines the tubes leading down to the lungs
Ciliated Epithelium
