Cells Flashcards
Types of cells
Prokaryotic and eukaryotic
Cell theory
It was given by Matthias Schleiden and Theodore Schwann. They state that all living things are made of cells and all cells come from other cells
Robert Hooke (1665)
First person to describe what a cell was.
Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek
First person to determine that cells were living things names animacules
Prokaryotic
- Found in bacteria and archaea
- Lacks nucleus
- Lacks membrane-enclosed organelles
- Smaller
Eukaryotic
- Found in eukarya
- Contains membrane-enclosed organelles
- Contains nucleus
Chromosome
Contains genetic material in the form of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)
DNA
- Contains genes that are transmitted from parents to offspring, and are the units of inheritance
- Encode the information necessary to build all of the molecules which establish the cell’s identity and function
- Made up of two long stand arranged in a double helix
-each chain is made up of 4 chemical buildings called nuecleotides (A, T, C and G)
Gene expression
The process by which information encoded in DNA directs the synthesis of protein or, in some cases, RNAs that are not translated into proteins and instead function as RNAs
Genome
The genetic material of an organism or virus; the complete complement of an organism’s genes along with its noncoding nucleus acid sequences
What was the human genome project about?
It was about finding out where each of the genes that control certain things are. It was a race between a private lab Craig Ventner and the US Government
