Cells Flashcards
basic unit of structure in living things
Cell
a cell without a nucleus
prokaryote
a cell with a nucleus
eukaryote
a specialized structure inside a cell that performs a certain function (also known as “little organs”)
organelle
the outer part of a cell that controls what enters and exits the cell
cell membrane
the gel-like fluid inside a cell that holds the organelles in place
cytoplasm
organelle that makes proteins (performs protein synthesis)
ribosomes
the “powerhouse of the cell” because it makes ATP/energy for the cell
mitochondrion (or mitochondria)
the control center of the cell that holds the cell’s DNA
nucleus
the part of the cell that produces ribosomes (it is found inside the nucleus)
nucleolus
the clean up crew of the cell - it breaks down old organelles and removes waste from cells
lysosomes
organelles in animal cells that help with cell division
centrioles
organelles in plant cells that perform photosynthesis
chloroplast
the rigid layer on the outside of plant cells that surrounds the cell membrane
cell wall
a large sac that stores water and nutrients in plant cells
central vacuole
