Cells Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
State three factors of diffusion
Temperature. Surface area. Concentration
Compare the speed of particles at 10 degrees and 40 degrees
The particles at 40 degrees will be moving a lot faster than those at 10 degrees
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
The site of chemical reactions
What are cells ?
Cells are the building blocks of life
How can we view cells?
Through a microscope
What is a specialised cell?
A cell that has been adapted to perform a specific function
Give 3 examples of specialised cells
Red blood cell. Sperm cell. Nerve cell
What is the function of a red blood cell?
Red blood cells carry oxygen around the body
Name an organelle in which aerobic respiration occurs
Aerobic respiration occurs in the mitochondria
What is the function of a cell wall?
The cell wall maintains the shape of the cell and supports it
What is the function of the nucleus?
The nucleus controls the functions of the cell and contains DNA
What is the function of the vacuole ?
The vacuole stores cell sap
Compare the cell wall and cell membrane
The cell wall is fully permeable. The cell membrane is partially permeable.
Define osmosis
Osmosis is the movement of water through a membrane
