Cells Flashcards
State 3 differences between a prokaryotic cell and a eukaryotic cell
Prokaryotic cells have no nucleus whereas eukaryotic cells do have a nucleus.
Prokaryotic cells have a single circular chromosome whereas eukaryotic cells have many linear chromosomes.
Prokaryotic cells have a plasmid whereas eukaryotic cells have no plasmid
What are the 3 parts of Cell Theory?
Cells are the basic functional and structural units of life.
All cells come from pre-existing cells.
All living things are made of one or more cells or products of cells.
Give an example of a prokaryotic cell
Bacteria
Give an example of a eukaryotic cell
Plant cell or an animal cell
Plasma membrane
regulates the inputs and outputs of the cell
Cytosol
Fluid part of the cell where some chemical reactions occur
Nucleus
Contains the DNA which controls cellular functions by coding for proteins
Mitochondria
Site of aerobic cellular respiration
What is the word equation for aerobic cellular respiration?
glucose + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water
Ribosomes
Site of protein synthesis
Lysosome
Contains digestive enzymes for the destruction of unwanted cellular material
Chloroplast
Site of photosynthesis
Which type of cells are chloroplasts found?
Only plant cells
Chlorophyll
The light absorbing pigment in a chloroplast
What is the worded equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water —-(with the presence of light)—-> glucose + oxygen (with the presence of light)
