Cells Flashcards
What is the nucleus in animal and plant cells?
Contains DNA of the organism and controls the cell’s activities.
What is the cytoplasm in animal and plant cells?
The water-like liquid that makes up most of the cell in which chemical reactions occur.
What is the cell membrane in animal and plant cells?
Outer layer of the cell and controls what goes in and out of the cell.
What is the Mitochondria in animal and plant cells?
Tiny parts of cells floating around in the cytoplasm where energy is released from glucose from food. This is where most respiration happens.
Define respiration.
A chemical reaction that occurs in the mitochondria where glucose and oxygen react to produce carbon dioxide and water, releasing energy.
What are specialised cells?
Cells designed to do a certain job- e.g sperm cells
What is the cell wall in plant cells?
A tough outer OUTER layer of the cell, which contains cellulose to provide strength and support to the plant.
What is the vacuole in plant cells?
A space inside the cytoplasm that contains a watery liquid called cell sap. It keeps the cell firm.
What are chloroplasts in plant cells?
Structures found in the cells of green parts of plant only ( stems and leaves) which contains chlorophyll in which photo synthesis occurs.
Why do plants feel firm?
Plants feel firm beacuse of their cellular walls
What do red blood cells do?
Red blood cells cary oxygen around your body.
What do white blood cells do?
White blood cells protect and fights against infections.
