Cells Flashcards
What is a cell?
The smallest unit that can live on its own and that makes up all living organisms and the tissues of the body.
Nucleolus (both cells)
Houses the DNA within the Nucleus.
Chloroplast (plant cell)
Filled with chlorophyll; contains stacks of discs.
Nuclear Membrane (both cells)
Encases the Nucleus.
Cytoplasm (both cells)
Gel-like liquid that fills the cell, Provides suspension to organelles so the move around easier.
Ribosomes (both cells)
Small dots; attached to ER or float freely In cytoplasm, Synthesizes protein (production)
Cell membrane (both cells)
Surrounds the cytoplasm and other organelles, Allows things to enter and the exit the cell; gets rid of waste.
Vacuole (both cells)
Much larger in plant cells than animal cells, Storage site of water , nutrients, and waste, Helps keep plant cells rigid (maintain shape)
Mitochondria (both cells)
Double membrane organelle with inner folds, Converts glucose molecules into energy ie where respiration takes place.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) (both)
Flattened sacs/tubes; smooth or rough (ribosomes attached), Transports proteins and other molecules around the eukaryotic cell.
Rough ER (both)
Flattened sacs/tubes; smooth or rough (ribosomes attached), Transports proteins and other molecules around the eukaryotic cell.
Golgi Body (both cells)
Curved shaped sacs; Contain enzymes; found between the ER and cell membrane, Packages proteins.
Cell Wall (plant cell)
Rigid; surrounds plant cells, provides support, protection.
Lysosome (both cells)
Small, circular organelle that contains enzymes, Digest old cells parts; Aids with removal of waste.
Cytoskeleton (both cells)
Fibers found in the cytoplasm, Acts like a skeleton and muscles; Aids in support, and movement.
