Cells Flashcards

1
Q

Are human cells multicellular or unicellular?

A

Human cells are multicellular, and have several parts (Organelles) which make it work.

Q

What is the function of the ribosomes?

A

THe ribosomes are the site of protein synthesis, they may be free in the cytoplasm or bound to RER.

Q

What is the function of the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER)?

A

THe SER is a system of membranes with no ribosomes, and is a site of lipid synthesis (E.g., oestrogen, and testosterone).

Q

What is the function of Centriloles?

A

The centriloles are protein microtubles that help form spindle fbres which help during cell division (Mitosis and Meiosis).

Q

What is the function of the Golgi apparatus (Golgi body)?

A

The Golgi apparatus modifies and packages the proteins and lipids made in the Rough and Smooth ER into vesicles.

Q

What are Light microscopes?

A

Light microscopes use light rays, and is cheaper than Electron microscopes. They have lower magnification (Up to x1000) and lower resoloutsion (Lower clarity of image.

Q

How do you work out the real size, magnification, and image size of a cell?

A

For the real size, you divide the image size by the magnification. For the magnification, you divide the image size by the real size. For the image size, you times the actual size by the magnification.

17
Q

What is an organelle?

A

An Organelle, is a tiny body inside a cell, which carries out it’s functions.
