Cells Flashcards
Nucleus
The control center of the cell. Directs all activity and contains DNA. (Looks like a circle with another circle inside) (P & A)
Mitochondria
The powerhouse of the cell; produces energy for the cell by breaking down fats and carbohydrates to make ATP. (Looks like an oval with a spiky shape inside) (P & A)
Vacuole
Stores water, food, and waste. Small, many vacuoles for animal cells; one large, singular vacuole for plant cells (Looks like a little/big oval) (P & A)
Smooth ER
Used for the storage of lipids and steroids. (Looks like smooth liquid) (P & A)
Rough ER
Used to produce proteins and transport them. (Looks like spiky liquid) (P & A)
Golgi Body/Apparatus
Gets the smaller protein molecules from the ER, puts them together with other molecules, and sends them out of the cell. Also helps to transport lipids, fats, and create lysosomes. (Looks like Wi-Fi bars)
Ribosomes
They build proteins for the cell, take amino acids and form them into long protein chains the cell uses to grow and repair itself. (Looks like little periods, or filled in black dots)
Lysosomes
Created by the Golgi Body, they are responsible for breaking down molecules and cleaning other waste from the cell. (Looks like a bubble)
Cytoplasm
It is the fluid that fills the cell. It suspends or holds organelles in place. This gel-like fluid contains substances cells need to keep the cell alive and functioning. (Looks like soup broth)
Cell Membrane
The outer layer of the cell that controls what enters and leaves the cell. (Looks like a ring)
Cell
The smallest unit that can live on its own and that makes up all living organisms.
Cell Wall
The cell wall provides strength and structure for plant cells. Also helps control what enters and leaves the cell.
Organelle
A small structure contained in a cell that is surrounded by a membrane and has a specific purpose
Chloroplast
Found in plant cells; Organelle that’s the sight of photosynthesis.
