Cells Flashcards
3 parts of the cell theory
All living things are made of one or more cells
The cell is the smallest unit of life
All living cells come from pre-existing cells
The cell theory is significant because it describes:
How all living organisms share a common structure.
How cells which serve similar functions are found in a variety of organisms.
How parent cells pass on info to the daughter cells.
What do cells need?
Obtain water, gasses, nutrients, and vitamins and minerals.
Maintain normal cell functioning.
Grow and reproduce.
Remove wastes.
What is a cell wall?
It is only found in plant cells, and surrounds the cell membrane. It protects the cell and maintains the plant’s shape.
Cell Membrane
Knows what to let in what to keep out.
What is Cytoplasm
The region of the cell between the cell membrane and nucleus, where the organelles are in this jelly called cytoskeleton.
What is the nucleus
The brain of the cell. Contains DNA for genetic info and RNA for making ribosomes for protein.
What is endoplasmes reticulum rough and smooth?
Rough er has ribosomes attached to it for making proteins.
Smooth er is where lipids and carbohydrates are made.
What is Golgi?
Revive materials from the er then delivers them to the outside of the cell.
What are vacuoles?
It’s a storage area. in plant cells it has water and is big.
Mitochondria
The powerhouse of the cell. Also where chemical energy in sugar is converted into real energy.
What is Chloroplast?
Does photosynthesis for the plant cell.
What is centriole?
The GPS for the cell. Only in animal cells.
What are Lysosomes?
Cleans up the cell the cell.
What are ribosomes?
Makes proteins
