Cells Flashcards
1
Q
What is a cell?
A
The smallest living unit of a living organism
2
Q
nucleus
A
contains the DNA that controls the cell
3
Q
cell membrane
A
controls what substances enter and leave the cell
4
Q
mitochondria
A
carry out respiration to release energy from food
5
Q
ribosome
A
makes proteins needed for growth and repair (protein synthesis)
6
Q
cytoplasm
A
the fluid that contains cell structure and chemicals
7
Q
what organelles are in plant cells but NOT animal cells?
A
chloroplast- carry out photosynthesis to make food using sunlight
vacuole- a large membrane bound bag that contains cell sap
cell wall- gives cell strength and stops it from bursting
8
Q
differences between the structure of a bacterial cell and a plant/animal cell
A
- bacterial cells are prokaryotic and plant/animal cells are eukaryotic
- bacterial cells don’t have a nucleus they have chromosome instead
- eukaryotic tend to be larger than prokaryotic
- existence of vacuoles
- flagella mobility
