Cells Flashcards
Cell organelles
A structure that carries out a specific activity for a cell
Cytoplasm
Organelles reside (live and float around in)
Cell membrane
Every cell is enclosed by the membrane; controls passage of materials in and out
Nucleus
Control center of the cell, contains DNA
Endoplasmic Reticulum
“ER”, transports material through the cell, Rough ER: has ribosomes;it makes protein, Smooth ER: no ribosomes;makes fats
Ribosome
Makes proteins, found attached to rough ER or floating free
Golgi Apparatus
Stores, modifies, and packages proteins
Lysosomes
Garbage disposal of the cell, contains enzymes that break down wastes
Mitochondria
“Powerhouse of the cell”, cellular respiration occurs here to release energy for the cell to use
Chloroplast
Only found in plant cells, contains the green pigment chlorophyll, site of food production
Cell Wall
Only in plant cells; rigid, protective barrier, located outside of cell membrane
Vacuoles
large vacuole in plant cell, smaller vacuoles in animal cell; stores water, food, enzymes, wastes, pigment, etc.
