Cells Flashcards
Name all 5 animal cell organelles
Cytoplasm, Nucleus, Cell Membrane, Ribosomes, Mitochondria
What is the purpose of the Cytoplasm
where most chemical reactions
happen, these are
controlled by enzymes
What is the purpose of the nucleus
To store DNA that controls the cell’s activities
What do the Ribosomes do
Synthesize proteins.
What do the Mitochondria do
They take care of respiration and provide energy for the cell via this prosess
Name all 7 organelles present in a typical plant cell
Cell wall, Cell membrane, LARGE vacuole (never just say vacuole), Ribosomes, Chloroplasts, Nucleus and Cytoplasm
What is the purpose of a cell wall and what is it made from?
The cell wall supports the cell, strengthening it. It is made from Cellulose
What is the purpose of a cell membrane
A cell membrane controls what enters and exits the cell
What is the purpose of a large vacuole and what does it contain?
The large vacuole maintains the internal pressure of the cell and contains sap
What do chloroplasts contain and what are they needed for?
Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll and they are required for photosynthesis.
Name the 9 organelles of a typical bacteria (prokaryotic) cell.
Plasma membrane, Cell wall, Capsule, Ribosomes, Pilus, Cytoplasm, Plasmid, Flagellum, and nucleoid.
What is the nucleoid
The nucleoid is the area in a prokaryotic cell where the DNA is stored, unlike in animal and plant cells (eukaryotic) it is not membrane-bound, thus just floats in the cytoplasm.
What is the flagellum
The flagellum is a long “hair-like” structure that rotates to allow a bacterium to move.
What is the plasmid?
The plasmid is a small strand of DNA that contains genes for things like drug resistance in a bacterium, this DNA can be shared among other bacteria.
