Cells Flashcards
what is the function of the nucleus?
the nucleus contains genetic material that controls the activities of the cell.
what is the function of the cytoplasm?
the cytoplasm is a gel like substance where most of the chemical reactions happen. it contains enzymes that control these chemical reactions.
what is the function of the cell membrane?
the cell membrane holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out.
what is the function of the mitochondria?
the mitochondria are where most of the reactions for the aerobic respiration take place. respiration transfers energy that the cell needs to work.
what is the function of the ribosomes?
the ribosomes are where proteins are made in the cell.
what are different parts of a cell called?
sub cellular structures
do plant cells have the same sub cellular structures as an animal cell?
yes. they have all the bits that animal cell have, plus a few extra things that animal cells don’t have.
what is the function of a rigid cell wall?
it is made of cellulose and supports the cell and strengthens it.
what is the function of a permanent vacuole?
it contains cell sap, a weak solution of sugar and salts.
what is the function of the chloroplasts?
this is where photosynthesis occurs, which makes food for the plant.
what do chloroplasts contain?
they contain a green substance called chlorophyll, which absorbs the light needed for photosynthesis.
what type of cell is a bacteria cell?
a prokaryotic cell.
what does prokaryotic mean?
prokaryotic cells are smaller and simpler e.g. bacteria and are single celled organisms.
do bacteria cells have chloroplasts and mitochondria?
bacteria cells do not have chloroplasts or mitochondria.
do bacteria cells have a true nucleus?
bacterial cells do not have a ‘true’ nucleus - instead they have a single circular strand of DNA that floats freely in the cytoplasm. they may also contain one or more small rings of DNA called plasmids.
