Cell Transport Vocabulary Flashcards
Diffusion
Movement of molecules from high concentration to low concentration
Osmosis
Movement of water through the membrane
Passive Transport
Molecules moving from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration; type of transport
Facilitated Diffusion
Particles are too large to easily move through the membrane so requires protein channels; moving from an area of high concentration to low
Active Transport
When energy is required to move molecules through the membrane
Endocytosis
Food or liquid being brought into the cell using energy
Exocytosis
Waste being taken out of the cell
Pinocytosis
Liquids being brought into the cell; requires energy
Phagocytosis
Energy being using to bring food particles into the cell
Hypertonic
Having a higher concentration of solute than another solution; the cell will shrink
Hypotonic
Having a lower concentration of solute than another solution; the cell will swell
Isotonic
When there is an equal amount of water moving into and out of the cell
