Cell Transport Quiz Unit 2 Flashcards
Define passive transport
No energy requirements for molecules to move into or out of the cell.
Define active transport
Cells move materials in an opposite direction. It requires energy and the cell goes from low to high concentration
What is equilibrium?
It is a time when molecules are even throughout a space
Define osmosis
The diffusion of water across a membrane
What does “ISO” mean?
It means the same
What happens to a cell in an isotonic solution?
The water has equal movement. 1 in 1 out
What happens to the cell in a hypotonic solution?
The water moves into the cell (salt sucks) and the cell swells. [hypo=hippo]
What happens to the cell in a hypertonic solution?
The water moves out of the cell. The cell gets smaller
[hyper=mr.gray=skinny]
What happens to a plant cell in a hypertonic solution?
The central vacuole loses water and the cell shrinks causing wilting.
Define endocytosis
Cell takes in large particles by engulfing them.
Define exocytosis
Cells get rid of particles. Opposite of endocytosis
What is phagocytosis?
The process by which solid particles are engulfed by a cell and packaged in vacuoles ex: amoeba
What is pinocytosis?
Taking up a liquid and filling up tiny pockets found along the membrane.
Selectively permeable definition
Membranes that allow some things through. Ex: the cell membrane is selectively permeable
How can someone make diffusion happen faster?
By increasing the temperature->using warmer water. Causing them to bump into each other more frequently
Define diffusion
The process in which molecules are spread from areas of high to low concentration.
What is equilibrium?
It is a time when molecules are even throughout a space
