Cell transport Flashcards
What is Osmosis
the diffusion of water across a partially permeable membrane from a dilute solution (high concentration of water) to a concentrated solution (low concentration of water).
What is Active Transport
This is the net movement of particles against a concentration gradient, and so energy is required
What is Diffusion
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration
List the 4 factors that affect Diffusion
Membrane Surface Area, Temperature, Distance & Concentration Gradient
How does Membrane Surface Area affect the rate of diffusion?
The larger the surface area of the membrane that a substance is diffusing through (e.g. the membrane around a cell), the faster the rate of diffusion.
How does Temperature affect the rate of diffusion?
The higher the temperature, the higher the rate of diffusion
How does Distance affect the rate of diffusion?
The greater the distance a substance has to diffuse across, the more time taken.
For example, a thicker membrane creates a larger distance, so diffusion across it will take longer.
How does Concentration Gradient affect the rate of diffusion?
The bigger the difference in concentration between two areas, the greater the concentration gradient and the faster the rate of diffusion.
