Cell Transport Flashcards
1
Q
Describe protein channels
A
Filled with water
Open in the presence of certain ions
2
Q
Describe how protein carriers work
A
A molecule bonds to the protein causing it to open so it can move into the cell
3
Q
What is incipient plasmolysis
A
When the water potential is the same both in and out of the cell; so net movement of water occurs
4
Q
What is plasmolysis?
A
When water leaves cells as its water potential is higher than the solution outside. This causes the cell contents to shrink.
5
Q
Is facilitated diffusion active or passive transport?
A
Passive as it doesn’t require ATP
6
Q
What does isotonic mean?
A
When two solutions have the same water potential
7
Q
Order of organelles when you centrifuge them?
A
- Nuclei
- Chloroplasts
- Mitochondria
- Lysosomes
- ER
- Ribosomes
