Cell Transport Flashcards
Plasmolysis
contraction of the protoplasm in a living cell when water is removed by exosmosis. When it shrivels
Cytolysis
the dissolution or degeneration of cells. When it bursts.
Osmosis
The diffusion of water across a cell membrane. ONLY WATER.
Turgor Pressure
Also called hydrostatic pressure the pressure exerted on a plant cell wall by water passing into the cell by osmosis
Pinocytosis
Very small particles
Endocytosis
The process of things going into the cell.
Exocytosis
The process of materials leaving the cell.
Passive Transport
transport of a substance across a cell membrane by diffusion; expenditure of energy is not required
Diffusion
Example: when air fresheners defuse into the room.
Concentration Gradient
the gradual difference in concentration of a dissolved substance in a solution between a region of high density and one of lower density.
Phagocytosis
Very large particles.
Sodium potassium pump
The process of materials entering and leaving the cell.
Carrier Protein
A protein that transports substances across a cell membrane.
Facilitated diffusion
Transport of substances through a cell membrane along a concentrations gradient with aid of carrier proteins.
Ion channel
A complex of protein molecules in a cell membrane that form a pore through which ions can pass.
Hypertonic
When the concentration of solute molecules outside the cell is higher than the concentration in the cytoskeleton, the solution outside is hypertonic
Hypotonic
A solution shoes solute concentration is lower than the solute concentration inside a cell
Equilibrium
A state that exists when the concentration of a substances is the same throughout a space
Isotonic
A solution shoes solute concentration is equal to the solute concentration inside a cell
Contractile Vacuole
A large, fluid-filled organelle that stores water, enzymes, metabolic wastes, and other material.
Phagocyte
A cell that ingests and destroys(digests) forge in matter or microorganisms.
Active transport
The movement of chemical substances, usually across the cell membrane, against a concentration gradient; requires cells to use energy.
Vesicle
A small cavity or sac that contains materials in a eukaryotic cell; forms when parts of the cell membrane surrounds the material to be taken into the cell or transported within the cell.
