Cell Structure Pg. 2 Flashcards
1
Q
What are organelles
A
Organelles are tiny structures that are within the cell
2
Q
Name and explain the function for every organelle found in the typical animal cell
A
- Nucleus - contains the genetic material and contains the cell activity
- Cell membrane - controls what substances goes in and out of the cell
- Cytoplasm - where the chemical reactions in the cell takes place (contains enzymes)
- Mitochondria - where aerobic respiration takes place
- Ribosomes - where proteins are made by protein synthesis
- Small temporary vacuoles - controls water balance + support
- glycogen granules - where glycogen is stored

Q
Name and explain the function for every organelle found in a typical plant cell
A
- Nucleus - contains the genetic material and contains the cell activity
- Cell membrane - controls what substances goes in and out of the cell
- Cytoplasm - where the chemical reactions in the cell takes place (contains enzymes)
- Mitochondria - where aerobic respiration takes place
- Ribosomes - where proteins are made by protein synthesis
- Cell wall - rigid structure made of cellulose, supports the cell and strengthens it
- Chloroplasts - contains chlorophyll which makes food for the cell by photosynthesis
- Starch granules - where starch is stored
- vacuole - filled with cell sap which contains water + sugars, controls water balance and supports cell

Q
What are the differences in the structure of plant and animal cells
A
Plants have a cell wall, chloroplasts, starch granules and a vacuole. Animals don’t have a cell wall, don’t have chloroplasts, has glycogen granules and has small temporary vacuoles.
