Cell - Structure, Function and Organisation 2.1 Flashcards
What is a cell?
Living things are composed of basic units called cells
Chloroplast (plant cell only)
Absorbs light energy for the process of photosynthesis
Cell membrane
Controls the flow of materials in and out of the cell
Nucleus
- Controls all activities in the cell
- Contains chromosomes consisting of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) that carries information
Cell wall
Provides support, protection and fixed shape to the cell
Cytoplasm
Acts as a medium where chemical reactions occur
Vacuole (plant cell only)
Provides support to cells when filled with cell sap
Mitochondria (plant cell only)
Produces energy for reactions
What is a Multicellular cell? Give some examples.
organisms that consist more than one cell. eg; spirogyra, hydra, mucor
What is a Unicellular cell? Give some examples.
organisms that consist of only one cell. eg; amoeba. paramecium, euglena, chlamydomonas
