Cell Structure & Function Flashcards
What is the role of DNA?
DNA is the heritable material that is used to store and transmit information from generation to generation.
What is the role of RNA?
RNA acts as a messenger to allow the information stored in the DNA to be used to make proteins.
What is spliceosome?
A large complex of proteins and small RNAs found in nucleus for processing pre mRNA.
What are the three main parts of a cell?
Nucleus, cytoplasm, plasma membrane
What makes up the endomembrane system
nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, golgi apparatus, lysosome, plasma membrane
Where is rRNA made?
nucleolus
What is autophagy?
digestion of cell components: eg organelles
What is autolysis?
digestion of entire cell?
What protein makes up microfilaments?
actin
What protein makes up intermediate filament?
keratin
What protein makes up microtubules?
tubulin (dimers) : alpha and beta
Which of the two cytoskeleton fibres are dynamic?
microfilament and microtubules
