Cell structure and transport - B1 Flashcards
Define “Diffusion”
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Define “Osmosis”
Osmosis is the net movement of water particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. It has a partially permeable membrane.
Define “Active transport”
Active transport is the net movement of particles against the concentration gradient, this requires energy
State all features in a plant cell
Mitochondria, ribosomes, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, vacuole, chloroplasts, nucleus
State all features in an animal cell
Cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, ribosomes, mitochondria
What is the formula to work out the magnification of a microscope?
Magnification of eye piece x magnification of objective
How would you calculate the magnification of an image?
Size of an image / real size of image
What are the advantages of an electron microscope?
Higher magnification, (x2,000,000), higher resolution
What are the advantages of a light microscope?
Cheaper, both living and dead organisms can be viewed
What are the features of Prokaryotic cells?
No nucleus, no membrane bound organelles, mainly unicellular organisms, less complex than eukaryotic cells, main example is bacteria.
What are the features of Eukaryotic cells?
Have a proper nucleus, usually has mitochondria, chloroplasts etc, Major organelles are contained with membranes, main example are animal and plant cells.
