Cell Structure and Function Flashcards
What is cytology?
Cytology is the study of cells.
Define Ingestion
The ability to take in nutrients.
What is absorbtion?
The ability to bring dissolved materials into the cell.
What is digestion?
The ability to break food or nutrients down into simpler forms by hydrolysis or with the help of enzymes so it can be utilized.
What is respiration?
The ability to release energy from the breakdown of food molecules.
What is transport?
The ability to distribute or ciculate molecules from one part of the cell to another.
What is homeostasis?
Homeostasis is the ability to maintain intyernal stability; also known as regulation.
What is the ability to combine simple compounds in to complex molucules?
Synthesis
What is the ability to release “bio”synthesized molecules?
Secretion
Define excretion.
The ability to remove soluble metabolic waste from the cell.
What do you call the ability to remove non-soluble, undigested waste from the cell?
Egestion
What is the ability to respond to stimuli?
Irritability
What do you call the ability to move?
Movement
Define reproduction.
The ability to produce more cells
What is a cell membrane?
The cell membrane, also called the plasma membrane, is the semi-permeable membrane between the cell contents and its surroundings.
