Cell Structure and function Flashcards
What is the cell theory?
all living things are composed of cells. these cells come from the division of pre-existing cells.
What 2 categories do cells fall into
Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic
what is prokaryotic?
Bacteria- primarily single-celled organisms. (relatively small cells, the lack internal membrane bound organelles, most have rigid cell wall to maintain shape)
What is eukaryotic?
Animals, plants, fungi and protists (larger cells, contained specialized membrane-bound organelles including a central nucleus, membrane can be stabilized by cholesterol)
What are diatoms?
single celled eukaryotes
what is amoeba?
a protozoan (single cell eukaryote)
what is bacteria?
single cell prokaryotes
what are molds?
fungi (single and multicellular eukaryotic cells)
what is elodea?
an aquatic plant (multicellular eukaryotes)
what are humans?
heart cells (multicellular eukaryotes)
what is a cell membrane?
a physical barrier that separates the cytoplasm from the external environment; also surrounds most organelles.
what is the inside of the cell called? What is it mostly made up of?
Intracellular Environment (cytoplasm).
70% is water and the rest is structures
what is the outside of the cell called?
the extracellular environment
what is the main component of the cell membrane?
Phospholipids (has a head and 2 tails)
Where are the heads of phospholipids always towards.
