Cell Structure Flashcards
Prokaryotes
Simple, single celled organelles with no membrane vound organelles
Eukaryotes
Complex organelles, much more complex than prokaryotes, containing membrane bound organelles.
The nucleus
Transcription takes place her, contains all of a cells gentic info and produces mRNA and tRNA. Responsible for creation of ribosomes.
The nuclear envelope
Double membrane, between 40-70nm. Coated in pores and ribosomes. Adds a layer of potection to th nucleus.
The nucleolus
Condensed area of chromatin.
The mitochndria
Site of aerobic respiration and produces ATP. A double membrane that forms the cristae and matrix, containing ring DNA.
Chloroplasts
Site of photosynthesis, double membrane folded into stacks.
RER
Syntheis of protiens.
SER
Synthesise, transport and store lipids/carbs.
Golgi
Produces lysosomes.
Process and package protiens.
Lysosomes
Hydrolyse ingested material.
Ribosomes
Smaller in prokaryotes, made of two subunits for protien synthesis.
Cell Wall
Made by cellulose in plants, other polysaccharides in prokaryotes. Provides mechanical strength and keeps the cell turgid.
Vacuole
Makes the cell turgid
