Cell Structure Flashcards
Learn about cells
Which organelle is adenosine triphosphate(ATP) formed?
Mitochondria
What is the correct sequence for the stages in mitosis?
Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telephase.
Which term is used to describe the way in which some cells are able to engulf solid particles?
Phagocytosis.
Which organelle is responsible for transport of materials around the cell?
The endoplasmic reticulum consists of a system of membranes, and is used to transport a variety of substances around the cell.
What takes place during the interphase stage?
The stage during the cell cycle during which the cell rests between cell division.
Diploid cell
A cell containing 2 sets of chromosomes (2n) one set inherited from each parent.
Gametes
A haploid reproductive cell. Such as sperm or an egg. Gametes unite during sexual reproduction to produce a diploid zygote
Sister chromatids
2 copies of a duplicated chromosome attached to each other at the centromere. These are eventually separated during mitosis or meiosis II.
Centromere
Centre where 2 chromatids pinch together.
Mitotic (m) phase
The phase of cell cycle that includes mitosis and cytokinesis.
Interphase
The period in cell cycle when the cell is not dividing. Chromosomes and organelles are duplicated, and cell size may increase. Often accounts for about 90% of the cell cycle.
Haploid cell
A cell containing only one set of chromosomes. (n) (hint. Sex cells).
G1 phase (gap1)
Growth phase of the cell cycle, consisting of the portion of interphase before dna synthesis begins.
S phase (synthesis)
The phase of the cell cycle, the portion of interphase during which dna is replicated.
G2 phase (gap2)
Growth phase, of the cell cycle consisting of the portion of interphase after dna synthesis occurs.
