Cell Structure Flashcards
What are organisms made of a single cell described as?
Organisms made of a single cell, such as bacteria and the fungus yeast, are described as being unicellular.
What are organisms made of more that one cell described as?
Organisms made of many cells such as animals, most plants and many species of fungi, are described as being multicellular.
What are living organisms made up of?
Living organisms are made up of millions of units called cells.
Name the piece of equipment we use to see cells
Cells are microscopic so to see their structure we need to use microscopes. We can see more structures clearly if we use stains to colour specimens before putting them under the microscope.
What are stains?
Stains are coloured dyes that are absorbed by some cell structures but not by others. An example of a stain which is used is iodine.
What is the ultrastructure of a cell?
The ultrastructure of a cell is its fine structure as revealed at high magnification.
What are structures which are specialised for particular functions in animal, fungal and plant cells, called?
Animal, fungal and plant cells all contain structures specialised for particular functions called organelles.
Name the structures found in animal cells
Cytoplasm Nucleus Ribosome Cell membrane Mitochondria
Name the structures found in plant cells
Cytoplasm Nucleus Ribosome Cell membrane Mitochondria Chloroplast Vacuole Cell wall
Names the three structures found in plants cells, but not animal cells

What is a yeast?
A yeast is a unicellular fungus

Name the structures found in a bacterial cell
Cell wall Ribosome Plasmids Cell membrane Cytoplasm Large circular DNA molecule
What are plant cell walls made out of?
Plant cell walls are made of cellulose
What are fungi cell walls made out of?
Fungi cell walls are made of chitin
