Cell Structure Flashcards
Lysosome
L: scattered in cytoplasm
F: digest ingested materials and worn-out materials
Mitochondria
L: scattered throughout cell
F: controls release of energy from foods; forms ATP
Microvilli
L: projections of the plasma membrane
F: increase the membrane surface area
Golgi apparatus
L: near the nucleus(in the cytoplasm)
F: packages proteins to be incorporated into the plasma membrane or lysosomes are exported from the cell
Centrioles
L: two rod-shaped bodies near the nucleus
F: “spin” the mitotic spindle
Smooth ER
L: cytoplasm
F: site of steroid synthesis and lipid metabolism
Rough ER
L: cytoplasm
F: transports proteins made in ribosomes to other cites in the cell; synthesizes membrane lipids
Ribosomes
L: attached to membranes or scattered in the cytoplasm
F: synthesize proteins
Cilia
L: short cell surface projections; look like tiny hairs
F: act collectively to move substances across cell surface in one direction
Microtubules
L: internal structure of centrioles; part of cytoskeleton
F: support cell and give it shape(cytoskeleton) involved in cell movement
Peroxisomes
L: scattered in cytoplasm
F: detoxifying alcohol; hydrogen peroxide
Microfilaments
L: tiny rods running through cell interior/ cytoplasm
F: contractile protein(actin); moves cell or cell parts; core of microvilli
Intermediate filaments
L: part of cytoskeleton
F: provide support for the plasma membrane
Inclusions
L: cytoplasm
F: stores fat
Plasma membrane
Location: External boundary of the cell
Function:confines cell contents; regulates entry and exit of materials
