Cell Structure Flashcards
What is an organelle?
An organelle is the structure inside the cytoplasm of all types of cells
What is the structure of an animal cell?
Cytoplasm, nucleus, ribosome, mitochondria, cell membrane
What is the function of the nucleus?
Controls all cell activities and contains genetic information
What is the function of ribosomes?
The site of protein synthesis
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Controls the entry and exit of materials into and out of the cell
What is the function of mitochondria?
The site of aerobic respiration and ATP production
What is the function of cytoplasm?
The site of biochemical reactions in the cell
What is the structure of a plant cell?
Nucleus, vacuole, cytoplasm, chloroplasts, cell wall, ribosomes, cell membrane, mitochondria
What is the function of chloroplasts?
The site of protein synthesis. These contain the green pigment chlorophyll which traps light energy
What is the function of the cell wall?
Made of cellulose fibres. Gives the cell rigidity and supports the cell
What is the function of the vacuole?
Filled full of water and solutes. Acts to support the cell
What is the structure of a fungal cell?
Nucleus, vacuole, cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, mitochondria and ribosomes
What is the structure of a bacterial cell?
Cell wall, cell membrane, chromosomes, cytoplasm, ribosomes and plasmids
What are plasmids?
Extra rings of DNA
What structure(s) are found in all cells?
Cell membrane and ribosomes
What does selectively permeable mean?
Controls the entry + exit of moelcules and only allows certain molecules in
What
